It's Up To Us: We Can Take Care of Our Own
What do Black Lesbian organizations need to sustain themselves? How do we support our existing leadership and develop new leaders? Many Black Lesbian organizations started because of a community need and this has led to “on the job” leadership development with little to no training, and extensive burnout. While many great leaders have come through this way, it has not prepared our organizations to continue once those leaders are gone. Historically, our organizations have been supported primarily by volunteers, and the donations of goods and services. While this support continues to be critical and has assisted in initial growth, it has not been enough to keep up with the financial or structural needs. In this session we will focus on Black Lesbian leadership and organizational development that honor our beginnings, assess our impact, look at our future and allow us to share our successes and best practices. Together let’s consider how we define leadership, support our existing leaders, how to nurture our new leaders; and examine how & why our organizations developed, how they’ve grown, what’s needed now and what WE know for sure.
